Summary: A devastating flood have swept away buildings, roads and vehicles in the mountainous state of Uttarakhand, which borders Nepal and China. It caused approximately 150 people's death. Singh said it is feared that loss of lives could eventually be much higher. Still, rescue workers in northern India are scrambling to save people left stranded by devastating floods. Not only the massive death of people, the flood has been more problematic because Uttarakhand is often referred to as "the Land of Gods." It is the home of a deeply revered Hindu temple that attracts many pilgrims. The temple is intact, but shops and other buildings have been severly damaged. According to the research, the reason of the flood is the extreme weather. Past few days in a region of India, there was the worst of the heavy rain and it brought chaos in the Indian capital, New Delhi, inundating streets, shops and homes.

Opinion: As the summer begins and monsoons are about to come, many countries are in danger of flooding. Flooding can result a lot of victims with the financial and economical damage. We cannot prevent the natural disaster, but we might reduce the losses. When it rains, we should not go near to seashore. Also it will be helpful when the construction become stronger. Sorry for the victims of the flooding, and I hope the rescue workers would work safely, too. Fund-raising for India would also help them recover the city more quickly.

Summary: Former South African leader Nelson Mandela, 94, has been in serious but stable condition since rushed to a Pretoria hospital with a recurring lung infection. And currently, he is "responding better to treatment", President Jacob Zuma told the country's Parliament. Many South Africans are outpouring public prayers and good will during a difficult period for the Mandela family. Mandela's history of lung problems dates to when he was a political prisoner on Robben island during the apartheid era, and he has battled respiratory infections over years.

Opinion:Nelson Mandela is one of the world's most revered men, who led the struggle to replace the apartheid regime of South Africa with a multi-racial democracy. He is the country's first black president and has worked for peace of conflict for his entire life. During his presidency, he also reduced poverty and economic difficulties through his sophiscated, effective, and honest policy.  And he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for developing the education, health, and economic problems for the black people in less developed country. I hope he would get better soon and show us his charisma again to the world. For his recovery of health, we should send the messages of support and prayer.

S. Korea's fiscal deficit widens in Q1

Summary: South Korea's fiscal deficit is widened during the first quarter of this year, 2013. The central government's total income and expenditure has 14.8 trillion won deficit for the first third months of this year, widening 3.5 trillion won more. Recently, the national assembly approved a 17.3 trillion won extra budget to recover the depression.

Opinion: Growing deficit is caused by slow economic growth.Government should put more efforts to support economic growth by frontloading spending. If we have more deficit, it might lead to economic depression and we would not be able to recover again. I hope Korean economy would jump up!

Relation:  Government taking action with the policies are called fiscal policy. Expansionary fiscal policy is to increase aggregate demand and stimulate the economy, and  Contractionary fiscal policy is to reduce aggregate demand and slow the economy

<Fed's actions>

 -   Expansionary Monetary Policy (Tight Money)
: In recession, Fed increases money supply to increase aggregate demand
: Buy bonds on the open market, lower the reserve requirement, and reduce the discount rate
-      Contactionary Monetary Policy (Easy Money)
: Fed decreases money supply to check aggregate demand and inflation
: Sell bonds on the open market, raise the reserve requirement, and increase the discount rate

South Korea cheating scandal hits university bids

By Dan Rivers, CNN
Watch this video

Summary: Recently, SAT test had been canceled across the whold of South Korea. Many students felt panic because it was almost the first extreme decision that College board made. It was due to a leak of SAT questions and answers before the tests on January. Many students had to cancel their tests and had to wait for the next SAT.

Opinion: As a student preparing for SAT in Korea, i feel very bad about Koreans for leaking the questions and answers. Because of some immoral teachers from Seoul SAT academies, many students are having troubles and will going to be harder time getting into American colleges. I hope everyone to be moral so that every student would get to college fairly with equal opportunities.

Relation: It is a big amount of economic loss in Korea. Korea lost its faith and the international students would be harder to get into college. Or the colleges would accept the students who can pay a lot of money. It is like taking away of money from Koreans more and more. Also, Korean students who are paying a lot of money to study for SAT means a big loss to Korean economy. I think we should fix the problem.

Summary: The first time Yoon Hee was abandoned, she was an infant. Six months after her birth, her parents divorced and left her in the care of a friend. When she was 8, she had gone back to live with her mother. But she left her again and she was sent into the street. Like the general North Korean children, she had to freeze to death in winters, beg for mercy, pluck grass for food, and cry so hard at night for loneliness and starvation. But in the middle of those situations, she was undeterred- saying "I HAD A HOPE". A U.N. assessment in March found that country's estimated 28 million people, 16 million are chronically deprived of food. Nearly 28% of North Korean children suffer from stunting, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affair. She determined to leave North Korea and go to South. Two years after her arrival in Seoul, Yoon Hee's days are busy from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. with studies and a part-time job. She sleeps on the floor inside a pristine wood-paneled room with a white teddy bear, lying next to the other North Korean girls on pink blankets.

Opinion: I appreciate to Yoon He for not giving up the hope and left for what she wants. In North Korea, the unemployment has increased in these days. Those who are unemployed have no place to sleep, live, and eat. Still many people are suffering from the starvation and fight earnestly to survive. I think for North Koreans who came to South, should get job in South Korea and South government should increase the job in order to save North Koreans.

Apple Avoids $9.2 Billion in Taxes With Debt Deal

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-05-02/apple-avoids-9-2-billion-in-taxes-with-debt-deal.html

Opinion: This must be lies! It does not make sense that Apple Incs. has not paid the tax of that big amount of tax. As Apple Incorporation is known as one the biggest and most successful business in the world, they should show respectfulness to the law and be the good model to every business and individual as well. And keeping the law can gain the trust from others.

Related to Economics: As the demand of the products increase, the incorporation should expect consumer's expectation. The more honest the business be, the more consumers can trust and buy the product from the company.

N. Korea says inter-Korean relations enter into war phase

Published 2013-03-30

North Korean students participate in a rally to show support for their leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang on Thursday,

Summary: North Korea said that inter-Korean relations have entered into a state of war and all cross-border issues will be dealt with in a wartime manner. The North Korean leader Kim Jong-un put strategic rocket units threatening to strike targets in South Krea. It means North-South relations will be put at the state of war. "The state of neither peace nor war has ended on the Korean Peninsula," the Korean Central News Agency said. But the Korea is saying there is no change in our position that will continue the Kaesong industrial complex in a stable manner. North Korea is threatening the Koreans to be divided and have conflicts in it, but it is not working as well, so far. We view the latest warning as part of a series of provocative threats, the statement said.

Opinion: It had been almost a month since North Korea threatened South Korea and U.S to attack South Korea soon. In contrast to North Korea's threat and quit of Kaesong industry, and even though North Korea had said foreigners in South Korea has to leave and go back to their own countries, South Koreans are not that threatened yet. We are afraid, yet eagerly preparing the military to set war as soon as possible if needed. So far, there was no any attack from the threatening. It is time for North Korea to solve the conflicts with other world and forsake the communism or keep their pride and begin war. Of course war should not happen, so every countries should do their best to conciliate and discuss with North Korea what they want and what they should not do .

Chinese tourism: The good, the bad and the backlash

By Karla Cripps, CNN
April 10, 2013 -- Updated 0349 GMT (1149 HKT)

Summary: Chinese are found out to be the top international tourism spenders, with 83 million people spending a record US $102 billion on international tourism. However, Chinese are complaining that they are well treated; they fell treated like second class people, even when they spend a lot of money. It means service providers should more care about how to face Chinese guests to make them feel welcomed and comfortable. However, there are also another complaints from natives. Many people say Chinese also have bad manners during the tour. Many rich tourists are found entering a famous luxury boutique with a lit cigarette. Also, they keep on butting in, according to the citizens.

Opinion: I know many Chinese are traveling to many countries. They often come to Korea too, but I don't like them much even though they spend much money on Korea. It is because they are becoming clueless when it comes to civilized manners and etiquette. When a person goes to foreign country, they should be a representative of the country and act as a patriot. However, most of the Chinese are extremely rude, in my opinion. To show good things is very important when we go to other country. Acting as a representative, we have to keep etiquette. Also we should not ask others for treat me with good manner while i don't. Not only traveling, we should also save money and keep our etiquette when having tourism in other countries.

Threats of annihilation normal for South Koreans

By Jim Clancy, CNN
April 1, 2013 -- Updated 0925 GMT (1725 HKT)

Summary: Nowadays, many people around the world is concerning about the safety of South Korea and USA since the North Korea has threatened to restart the war. If the North Korea break out the war and start attacking the South Korea, Seoul will be a prime target since Seoul is a capital of Korea. It might only be minutes before artillery or rockets would come raining down. However, Koreans in Seoul lives in an ordinary lives and working busy as usual. Actually, most of the Koreans are not afraid or feeling any anxiety with the threatens that North Korea does.

Opinion: Including me, most of the Koreans are living outside of the fear of North Korea's threats. We know the North Korea does not actually want war. What they need and want is money and food. As a well developed, more democratic and wealthier country than North Korea, the South Korea is more prepared and do not have to fear all the times. Most of all, all of these perseverance and braveness came from the worse attacks the North Korea used to do last times.

Most Children’s Meals at Large Restaurant Chains Are Still Unhealthy, a Study Finds

Summary: A new study found out that the nutritional quality of meals for children on the menus of the 91 percent of nation's largest chain restaurants do not even meet the standards set by the National Restaurant Association's Kid LiveWell program. The center singled out Subway as the only restaurant that did not offer sugared drinks with its children's meal, instead suggesting water or low-fat milk. Also all eight of the sandwich meal combinations met nutritional criteria. Applebee is also the one of the best franchise restaurants that participate in the National Restaurant Association's Kid Live Well Program and requires at least one children's meal have two servings of fruits vegetables. With these some companies, a registered dietitian is working hard to improve the nutritional quality of the meals.

Opinion: Few weeks ago, there was uprising conflicts and concerns about the government interfering and regulating the size of sugary drinks. Many people criticized the decision saying that it is the government is regulating too meticulously. But for this case, we need a government action. I think government should have a certain regulation to make the company meet the standard or at least, adequate quality of healthy food. Even though it is hard, the government should at least try it first. This topic matches with a the government interference in micro-economics.

No soda ban here: Mississippi passes 'Anti-Bloomberg' bill

Senators in Mississippi approved a bill that would prevent efforts to ban the sale of large, sugary drinks.
SUMMARY: You will never be denied a colossal soda or huge restaurant portion because of government decision or civil law in Mississippi. In fact, recently New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg had attempted to ban the sale of large, sugary drinks in the city for the sake of citizens' health. However, many people rebelled and claimed that is is not the role of government to micro-regulate citizens' dietary decisions. In addition, state legislature has the authority to regulate the sale and marketing of food on a statewide basis. In response, the Gov. Phil Bryant passed a law preventing countries, districts and towns from enacting rules that limit portion sizes. There is enough regulation in Mississipi, Senate Tony Smith added.

OPINION: I first heard some of the govern officials are attempting to regulate the large size of sugary drink few days before through the CNN Student News in economics class. I was really shocked with the law, because i think this kind of regulation violates one's freedom. Government has no authority to control our health, i believe. If so, then it is not a democratic country. Instead, it becomes a "communist" country. I think the government rather try to PROMOTE healthy food, not trying to CONTROL people's choice to eat or drink. My current event relates to microeconomics, the demand of consumers. Freedom to choose food is on consumers, not the government.

One dead, 14 injured in forest fire in Pohang

read from: http://nwww.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20130310000175

A local resident runs away from a forest fire that engulfed one of the houses in Ulju County of Ulsan, Sunday. (Yonhap News)
Summary: On March 10 in 2013, a very big forest fire occurred in southeastern coastal city of Pohang. It cause 1 victim and 14 injured. Also it destroyed 5 hectares of the mountain and 53 houses. Most of the injured and damaged people are poor and since it is not a retention area,
government has no way to pay for them. The only way for them to be paid is from the person who cause the mountain fire. Unfortunately, police however found out that a 12-year-old middle school student started a fire in the forest. Those who lost their homelands are currently staying in community center without any promise their houses be recovered.

Opinion: Teenagers today in Korea do a lot of mischievous things frequently. We can hear a lot of news of teenagers killing their parents, stealing other's cars, heating their friends, and whatever. And for this time, a 12-year-old middle school student setting the forest fire. It could be treated as a little thing if they played with the fire only in their houses. However, they unexpectedly set a big fire and caused millions of dollars of damage. Since all of the problems first occur from the individual family. The parents should teach them which one is permitted and allowable, and which one is not. Also the law should punish him harshly so that no other teenagers would commit a same thing ever again. This is related to both macroeconomics and microeconomics, since the government and individuals should find the best solution for compensation for loss.

South Korea boycott of Japanese goods over island dispute
By Pamela Boykoff and Soo Bin Park, CNN
March 2, 2013 -- Updated 0010 GMT (0810 HKT)

Summary: South Korea and Japan are fighting each other over an island called 'Dokdo'. Dokdo lies between the two countries and currently is now possessed by Korea. However, Japan claims Dokdo to be their island based on some historical evidence. Their disputes are continuing as ownership can get exclusive rights to fishing, oil production and other commercial activities in surrounding waters. From the day of March 1, a public holiday in South Korea which celebrates the launch of the independence movement from Japan in 1919, Korea is launching a nationwide boycott of Japanese products. According to The President of the Save Local Stores Alliances, Oh Ho-suk, about 7.2 million members are participating the effort. They are pledging not to sell popular Japanese products like Mild Seven cigarettes, Asahi beer and Sony electronics. Some car mechanics are also saying they will refuse to repair cars from Japanese brands like Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

Opinion: Japanese is a very sensitive people to Koreans. Especially those strong feelings toward got worse as Japan claimed Dokdo as Japan's territory. Because historical evidence records Dokdo as Korean's territory, Japan is continuing arguing and insisting they are right. I hope our protest would continue and it might impact to Japan a lot. Japan really should apologize to Korea and stop claiming for Dokdo as their territory. This boycott represents our customer's freedom to choose their purchase and products.

Doubts loom over eurozone recovery

By Michael Steen, Frankfurt

Sources from : http://edition.cnn.com/2013/02/21/business/eurozone-recovery-doubts/index.html

Summary: France has generally the second-biggest eurozone economy. However, the hopes of a eurozone recovery slowed down and failed because of the collapse of France economy. France economy hit its lowest in nearly four years, prompting fears that Paris was struck in a "downward spiral". In order to save the eurozone economy and to help France recover their collapse, the eurozone discussed to solve the problems. What the eurozone came up for the solution is to increase calls for a further interest rate cut for the French government.

Opinion: I think the eurozone came up with a wise decision for France. If the interest rate decreases, then the amount of money that France government have to pay back to the eurozone would be less. Also, it would be easier for France to pay back. I hope France would recover the economy well so that eurozone would flourish again like the last time.

Obama aims small on infrastructure

By Fareed Zakaria

http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2013/02/13/obama-aims-small-on-infrastructure/

Summary: President Obama's State of the Union address presented his vision of smart government to create jobs and revive the economy. However, he lowered the value of infrastructure spending. He just spent $50 billion dollars for repairing the bridges that were fallen down nationwide, despite American Society of Civil Engineers concluded that $2.2 trillion should be spent over five years to bring the  infrastructure systems up to grade.

Opinion: President Obama's spending on infrastructure is classified as the macroeconomics. He carefully decided how to spend, but it  is just a band-aid on American's growing cancer of failing infrastructure. There are too many public establishments that should be spent to be repaired. However, i think President Obama is putting less budgets on it. Since infrastructure are used by every citizens in the nation and it is necessary for all of them, it is the first problems to be solved. I hope President Obama would distribute money fairly to infrastructure so that the people living in the United States would not have any difficulties of using the infrastructures.
