Superstorm Sandy cripples the East Coast

Read from : http://edition.cnn.com/2012/10/30/us/tropical-weather-state-by-state/index.html?iref=allsearch

Summary:
Sandy was one of the greatest storm in USA, which crashed into homes and trees. It reached from the Appalachians to the Great Lakes and beyond to Canada,It also triggered winter storm warnings from the mountains of Pennsylvania to those of Eastern Tennessee and North Carolina. Because it was very large and big, it influenced a wide range of America region. Many states was destroyed by Sandy- Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland,  Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and so on. They each had different damages and victims. Therefore, the trial for restoration system is all different to every states. Especially, for New Jersey, which had most damages, Sandy has killed at least six people. President Barack Obama said he will travel to New Jersey to join government in viewing widespread damage, Also New York City's Office of Emergency Management on Twitter called on residents to report imposters posing as power company employees, reminding them to look for identification cards.

Opinion:
Each state had all different damages and victims. Therefore, it needs all different restoration system to every states. If the federal government serves all different restoration system, it would be very unfair welfare. Since they have different damages, each state should have all different systems, too. I hope all the states would restore their areas well .

Ahn Cheol-soo withdraws his presidential bid

Endorses Moon Jae-in as the liberal candidate after protracted negotiation
안철수 사퇴…긴박했던 하루 살펴보니

Nov 24,2012

Independent candidate Ahn Cheol-soo announces he will withdraw his bid for presidential candidacy yesterday at a press conference at his campaign office in Gongpyeong-dong, central Seoul. [NEWSIS]

Summary:Almost two weeks have passed since Ahn Cheol-soo withdrew his presidential bid. On November 24, Independent candidate Ahn Cheol-soo announced that he will withdraw his bid for presidential candidacy. As candidate Moon and Ahn started negotiating about unifying the candidate into one, they struggled to reach a satisfying agreement. Ahn said “The method for the merger should meet the people’s expectation. However, Moon and I couldn’t narrow down our differences. My last proposal couldn’t lead to an agreement.” But he stated that he will still continue his will for changing Korean administration without any title. It came to a very big shock to candidates, and of course to the people. It is because he was applauded and supported by people because of his achievements and characteristics. He always emphasized people’s upright personality than anything.

Opinion: Ahn’s resignation showed the people’s disappointments with the existing political parties. Those who are responsible for creating a reliable social structure were hurting and betraying the citizens. Now it is time for a turnaround. Recent political parties are more concerned with winning political power than serving the people, and winning the presidential election rather than serving future interests of the country. These days we need a president with a new vision. We do not want presidents who are just busy attacking each other. Next time, I hope we would have a more structured and caring president. And I also want to appreciate to Ahn Cheol-soo for causing a change in the dynamics of the election with only existence.

UN General Assembly votes in favor of Palestinian statehood

Read from: http://www.foxnews.com/world/2012/11/29/israeli-official-downplays-palestinian-statehood-bid-ahead-un-vote/?intcmp=trending#ixzz2DeXCO54h

Summary: The Palestinians asked U.N to recognize a non-member state of Palestine in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, and the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip. U.N General Assembly has voted and upgrading Palestinian's status was approved by the 139 members with 41 abstentions. However, the tension is running high, as Israel and the United States warn the move could delay peace in the region. Palestine needed U.N. recognition to be able to resume negotiations with Israel. But United States think increasing Palestinian's role in the UN is absolutely the wrong approach, because Israel is one of American's closest allies, and any movement strengthen one of its fiercest enemies must not be tolerated."

Opinion: Since United States is a permanent country of the United Nation, and is powerful country, UN cannot ignore the United State's opinion. But still it can be a very big issue because the middle east countries make the conflicts. Since it can threaten many countries, it need more consideration and UN should distribute and share power to countries equally and try their best to keep world peace by cooperating with other countries.

Parties, candidates resort to negative campaigning ahead of presidential election

Read from : http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/national/2012/11/14/86/0301000000AEN20121114012200315F.HTML

Summary: During the campaign for president, there are three main candidates: Mrs. Park, Mr. Mun, and Mr. Ahn. Among them, in order to make more supports from public, the negative campaign is actively working, Especially, Mrs. Park from Saenuri Party keep try to find the default of Mr. Ahn, who has great support from the people. But here the problem is that they are doing forced interpretation. Mrs. Park blame the illegal act that the candidate Ahn's did, but he is proven innocent because it was legal thing to do in the past time. Also, Mrs. Park also asked the Seoul University to investigate Mr.Ahn's journal article about plagiarism. It is not proven anything yet, but a lot of people say it is not illegal thing. As a result, Mrs. Park is even losing her supporters.

Opinion: Negative campaign is attacking the opponent during a campaign. As one of the ways of campaign, negative campaign is a good way to decrease the supporters of the opponent if the reason is right and just. However, it can invoke more malice if the candidate did not do thing unjust and insisted the wrongdoing without no justifiable reasons. The negative campaign should be accurate and be honest fact to all of one.

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/11/08/authorities-iowa-teens-say-adoptive-parents-locked-them-in-basement-for-weeks/#ixzz2BfyINkyX

Summary:A mother and father were accused from not other people, but from their children. The 13-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy claimed authorities that their adoptive parents locked them in the basement of their home for weeks. Teenagers were only able to go to school only. The Iowa Department of Human Services said this kind of imprisonment is inappropriate. Children are being cared for in a safe place but that state law prevents him from discussing any details of the case.

Opinion: The law protects not only the adults, but also the children. Teenagers also have right to claim for right things and to get a civil rights. They should be protected from the harassment and the police should not neglect the children. We are all equal under the law. The state law also prevents them from discussing any details of the case. They are being protected in the safe place far from their adoptive parents.

South Dakota executes man for rape, death of 9-year-old girl in 1990Published October 31, 2012Associated Press

SouthDakotadeathpenalty.jpgJuly 18, 2012: This file frame grab provided by KELO-TV shows convicted killer Donald Moeller during a court appearance in Sioux Falls, S.D. (AP)

Summary: On Tuesday night, Donald Moeller, a South Dakota inmate was executed for the 1990 rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl. The girl was disappeared after her home to buy sugar at a nearby store so she could make lemonade. Donald Moeller kidnapped the girl, Becky, and drove her to a secluded area, then raped and stabbed her. Moeller initially was convicted in 1992, but the state Supreme Court overturned it, ruling that improper evidence was used at trial. He was again convicted and sentenced to die in 1997. The state Supreme Court affirmed the sentence, and Moeller lost appeals on both the state and federal levels. But it lasted for long time until execution. After he admitted for the first time in court that he killed the girl, on last month, he finally received a lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls, marking South Dakota's second execution this month in an unusual surge for a state that has carried out just two other death sentences since 1913. He was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m.

My Opinion: The girl's mother was steadfast with her opinion that she should watch the killer's last breathe. Though it was clear that Moeller was a criminal, his execution lasted for a very long time. I imagine how much her families felt unfair. I think the criminals should receive their sentence fast and should be punished as soon and much as they can. I also think the Supreme Court and police should never pass over these felony.

U.N. peacekeeper killed in Darfur ambush

By the CNN Wire Staff
October 18, 2012 -- Updated 1022 GMT (1822 HKT)

READ FROM: http://edition.cnn.com/2012/10/17/world/africa/sudan-peacekeeper-killed/index.html?hpt=wo_bn10

Summary: Members of the U.N. Mission in Darfur were on their way to check out reports of recent violence in the northern part of the province when they came under heavy fire from automatic weapons and mortars.
The peacekeepers returned fire, but one of their members died and three more were woundedAt U.N. headquarters in New York, Security Council members condemned the attack and demanded that Sudanese officials "swiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice."This conflict has led to international war-crimes charges against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and his defense minister. In 2011, a peace agreement was signed between the Sudanese government and one rebel movement with international support, but others refused.

Opinion: I think Africa is very dangerous and has a lot of conflicts and it even results the international damage. U.N, as an organization of promoting world peace, we the countries should cooperate each other and prevent more conflicts being occurred. It is really unjust action to leave the peacekeeper die and Sudan people die of conflicts.

Make schools safe for girls everywhere

By Jennifer Buffett, Special to CNN
October 11, 2012 -- Updated 0406 GMT (1206 HKT)

In the peaceful province of Bamiyan, Afghanistan, girls attend school without fear, unlike in Taliban-heavy areas.

Summary: On Tuesday, In Pakistan, 14-year-old Malala Yousufzai was shot by the Taliban on her way home from school on a bus. For the girls who live in the poor country, education is their ticket to a better future: for themselves, their families and their entire communities. However, unfortunately, girls around the world have also shared that how pursuing an education can be dangerous, The schools can create harassment and violence from teachers or the dangers they encounter as they walk to school.

Opinion: Today, as we celebrate the first United Nations International Day of the Girl by marking the progress that has been made for girls, we should keep in mind that we need to redouble our effort to create a future in which all girls can safely receive an education and reach their full potential. The benefits of education for girls are undeniable. But until we can ensure that schools are places of learning, rather than places of danger, girls will be held back. When girls are educated—and safe—they, along with our entire societies, will flourish.

Connecting with the viewer: 'Romney was able to out Obama Obama'

By Dan Merica, CNN
October 4, 2012 -- Updated 1756 GMT (0156 HKT)

During the 2008 presidential debates against Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Obama regularly looked into the camera when he spoke and countered the attacks of his Republican challenger. That debate style directly contrasted the way Obama appeared on Wednesday in Denver.

At one point, Romney directly told viewers that "virtually everything he [President Obama] just said about my tax plan is inaccurate."

"So if the tax plan he described were a tax plan I was asked to support, I'd say absolutely not," Romney said. "I'm not looking for a $5 trillion tax cut. What I've said is, I won't put in place a tax cut that adds to the deficit."

Again, as Romney was answering, Obama seemed to be taking notes. Following Romney's statement, Obama shot back, accusing Romney of tossing out his plan before the debate.

Iran blocks YouTube, Google over Mohammed video

Watch this video

Read from http://edition.cnn.com/2012/09/24/world/meast/iran-youtube-blocked/index.html

Summary: A online trailer for "Innocence of Muslims," is the film that mocks Mohammed as a womanizer, child molester and killer. It is known to insult their people’s sacred beliefs. Kamran Saghafi, of the High Council for the Internet in Iran, warned Iranians not to try to access the sites. So, Iran blocked YouTube and its owner Google over the weekend. Actually, the council was not involved in the decision to block the global Internet giants' sites, but that the action was "legal and authorized." Last week, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded that the United States remove the controversial movie from YouTube.

Opinion: I think internet is the place where the worldwide people can express their own different opinions and ideas. But the important thing is that we should all be polite and keep etiquette to each other, not just blame them. I think it is very not good way to insult other’s god in certain way especially on a popular media. But we don’t know how the public think about the video. Like this policy should be discussed enough between the Congress and the people.

Pakistani TV shows US ads condemning anti-Islam film

The BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Islamabad says people were "choked by tear gas"

Read from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-19664392

Summary: Pakistani TV channels are airing an advertisement showing new clips of US President Barack Obama condemning an anti-Islam film made in the US in an apparent attempt to undercut anger against the United States. The adverts emphasize the message reiterated by US officials that the film was not made by the US government, but that there is never any justification for violence. The embassy described the advert as a “public service announcement” and repeated the statements from Mr Obama and Ms Clinton. The reason why US embassy wanted to run the ads was because it is the best way to reach as many as 90 million Pakistanis. However, many protesters are burning an effigy of President Obama and threw missiles at the police. The Pakistani government has called a national holiday on Friday to enable people to demonstrate peacefully.Opinion: Conflicts always come from misunderstanding. I think the most problem and solution is that they do not believe each other and makes other misunderstand. I think they should more careful to each other not hurting their emotions. And for the protests now in Pakistan, American people who live or visit in Pakistan should avoid protests or large gatherings.

Opinion: I think most conflicts come from the misunderstanding and not caring about other people's emotion. Because the issues related to the religion is really important and sentative, both of them should be more careful and not hurt each other.

Long Lost 9/11 Note

Read from: http://edition.cnn.com/2012/09/11/us/9-11-lost-note/index.html?hpt=us_t5

Summary: Randy Scott was working on the 84th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. But he dies on September 11, due to the terrorists. Because he was in a very close place to the plane’s point of impact, his family had thought that Randy died instantly without suffering, or feeling any fear. However, it came out to be not true when they found the little note of Randy. The note reads: “84th floor… West Office… 12 people trapped”. It shows that he was not only alive after impact, but actively trying to get help. His friend stated that Randy broke the window and tried to help 12 people downstairs. However, the South Tower collapsed shortly after that. We would like to honor his bravery and mourn over his death.

My opinion: There were a lot of loss due to the 9/11 terror. People who had stayed in the building might fear with the horror. As the terror was not a justice, the loss of them is really impacting the Americans a lot. Then this year, Randy was found out that he was a brave man just after the plane has destroyed the building. Rather than waiting for death, he tried to help other people first. He wasn’t tremble nor nervous, when we see his handwriting notes. I hope his death will be more honored as a brave man and be a time to remind 500 days after 9/11. We also should not educate people like this to do this kind of terror.

News read from : http://edition.cnn.com/2012/09/05/tech/mobile/pew-mobile-privacy-gahran/index.html

Summary: In America, most people don't know what and how much private information does their phone have. The don't think clearly or consistently about mobile privacy. However, our phones have more information that we imagine. Routinely protecting your phone with a passcode or pattern is an easy way to prevent unauthorized access to your phone. Also, being careful of Cell Phone snooping is important way.

Opinion: As smart phone technology developed, many people get better and better phone. However, because smart phone is sharing a lot of things, the security of our privacy lessened. That's why more and more serious crimes are being committed, using their leaked privacy. We have to be interested more about our security of privacy and should try to not leak our information to the world.

Antarctic may host methane stores

Antarctic glacier
Ancient organic matter could be converted to methane by microbes

Large volumes of methane - a potent greenhouse gas - could be locked beneath the ice-covered regions of Antarctica, according to a new study.

Summary:

In Antarctic, ancient organic matter can be converted to methane by microbes under ice, according to the recent study. It is not surprising, because it is cold and pressures are high which are an adequate conditions for methane hydrate formation. Methane gas contributes to climate warming and is a potent greenhouse gas. It is an great amount of organic carbon, more than ten times the size of carbon stocks in northern permafrost regions. The authors are saying that it might act as a positive feedback on global warming.

My opinion:

A great amount of methane gas are being formed from ancient organic matter by microbes under ice. It might be a positive effect to the whole world, because it can be a positive feedback on global warming. Meanwhile, it also contributes to climate warming. I hope methane gas would bring positive consequence so that it would improve the international environmental issues.

Greece facing last chance, says eurozone chief Juncker

Summary:

Greece is now facing the worst problems with public finance. Now Athens must put in place economic and structural reforms. These include changes to the labor market, and the relaunching of privatisation programmes which have been promised but not enacted. Another issue with this problem is that Greece is in a danger of leaving Euro zone. However, Greece is totally opposed with it. During the week, Greece will receive its next instalment of loans worth 31.5bn euros that it needs to avoid defaulting on its vast public debts. Under the terms of the bailout agreement, Greece needs to demonstrate it can find 11.5bn euros in public spending cuts within two years in order to qualify for the money. Eurozone leaders have so far resisted any move to soften the bailout conditions, especially in Germany, where the government is under pressure not to make any more concessions.

Opinion

Greece has been a serious issue these days. They are in danger about to be collapse and even pull out from Euro. Every country in the world is trying to support Greece for World economy. It might include changes to the labor market, and the relaunching of privatisation programmes which have been promised but not enacted. For solution, Greece will be received its next insalment of loans worth worth 31.5bn euros that it needs to avoid defaulting on its vast public debts. It is the time that Greece need to change. I also hope Greece would revive again as before so that world economy would not change instantly.
